RFSL Stockholm's board would like to comment on the debate article published last Friday on SVT Opinion. In the article, our chairman focused on oppression against LGBTQ people in the Järvafältet area. The article was a reaction to the fact that Kalla Fakta and SVT Opinion's program on harassment against women in Stockholm's northern suburbs did not address the LGBTQ perspective.
RFSL Stockholm wants to emphasize that oppression against LGBTQ people is not something that is unique to Järvafältet or suburbs. We see and fight oppression in all parts of Stockholm. We think it is important to highlight the vulnerability that exists and are aware that oppression can come from many different structures. Whether the oppression comes from macho culture, honor norms, whiteness norms, due to disabilities or something else, it is equally important to fight. One of our means of combating oppression against LGBTQ people is to work with norm criticism and many of the activities we organize are linked to empowerment.
The debate article has been perceived by some as pitting group against group and painting the suburbs in a black light. This is something that both our chairman and the board as a whole strongly reject, and it is very unfortunate that the article has been interpreted in this way by some. RFSL Stockholm will, as the feminist and anti-racist organization we are, continue to work for everyone's right to be who they are and to fight oppression against LGBTQ people in all parts of Stockholm.
The Board of RFSL Stockholm
