Now the National Board of Health and Welfare has published a report where they have looked at what is registered of diagnoses and causes of death in people living in same-sex marriages compared to people in same-sex marriages. The report shows a high level of mental illness, high levels of risky drug use, and perhaps most unpleasantly, a very, very high number of suicides. Now, one cannot excuse the fact that the survey is based on self-estimates (as previous life expectancy surveys have done) and thereby criticize the method (even though they have arrived at roughly the same result). The National Board of Health and Welfare's report is hard facts about disease and causes of death.
- It is tragic that in Sweden we can see these clear signs of vulnerability and society's inability to protect the entire population on equal terms. The National Board of Health and Welfare's deep dive into available registers is a tragic testimony to the deep ill-health that affects people living with someone of the same sex to a greater extent than others, and in many cases leads to premature death. Governments and agencies have ignored the ill health of this group for decades and it is time for authorities and policy makers to take responsibility for change. Targeted interventions are needed," concludes Christian Antoni Möllerop.
