Talk about it

RFSL Stockholm's project Prata om Det, funded by the Swedish Gender Equality Agency, is a broad initiative with the aim of reducing LGBTI people's increased exposure to sexualized violence through early violence prevention efforts.

The project group behind the Talk About It initiative noted that the current preventive measures against sexualized violence are based on heteronormative patterns. The aim of the project is to contribute to a development where LGBTI people have the same conditions and opportunities as the rest of the population to achieve good sexual health.

Promoting a culture of consent

Talk about it is one of the first initiatives that the Swedish Gender Equality Agency (JÄMY) has allocated financial resources to under the Ordinance (2022:722) on government grants for certain violence prevention work. The background is that the Government in its action program for 2021-23 identifies LGBTI people as one of the groups whose vulnerability to violence should be given special attention.

According to the Swedish Gender Equality Agency's assessments, LGBTI people's increased vulnerability to violence is partly due to the fact that it can be more difficult as an LGBTI person to seek support due to the risk of being discriminated against. There is also a concern about the risk of being met with prejudice or lack of understanding in organizations where there is currently a lack of knowledge about LGBTQI.

A project in three parts

The project is divided into three parts: an information initiative in the form of a discussion series, the development of a prevention program that specifically focuses on sexualized violence against LGBTI people and a training focused on making sexualized violence visible among LGBTI people. The training will be held for municipal and regional professionals.

”When it comes to sexual violence, we can work preventively by building strong cultures of consent based on reciprocity, inclusion and respect.”

Project manager Suzann Larsdotter,
who is a certified social worker and sexologist.

The series of conversations that will kick off the project will focus on violence prevention with a focus on sexual violence, strategies to promote a culture of consent and how to challenge harmful societal norms. A selection of people who have made their mark in the LGBTI community in various ways and/or have valuable experiences will participate in the series, which will be published in the form of a podcast.
